LOWER  PECOS

ARCHAIC WEAPONS:  Primitive but Dangerous!

People who lived in the Lower Pecos region 5,000 years ago had to hunt animals to survive.  Of course, they needed the protein and fat found in meat, but animals provided much more than food.  Animal hides provided protection from the cold.  Sinew is made from an animal’s ligaments.  Sinew is used to attach dart points to dart shafts.  It can also be used like thread. Ligaments are used to connect muscles to bone.  Bone marrow can be used in paint making, and bones are used as tools.

Now it’s time for you to decide what kinds of weapons were used by the Archaic Indians of the Lower Pecos.  Look at the weapons below, and determine which ones you thing were used in ancient Texas.  When you have finished going through the list, move your cursor across each of the weapons.

Handprints

If the weapon was used, you will see a photograph of hand prints found on the wall of the Fate Bell Shelter.  Think of these hands as applauding you for guessing correctly.

 Panther at Panther Cave

If you see a photograph of the panther at Panther Cave, the tool was not used.
